Now i read somewhere that i can reinstall XP on a new comp but i have to call microsoft and get a new serial number. now i have to do this because i am completely moving out from my old POS compaq to a freshly built PC by me(in the sig) well is it possible and there is no way i am spending another 100 bucks to get software i already have.

if xp came with the compaq computer and is an oem version then the legal way to move it is to put some hardware from the compaq computer in to the new one. The floppy drive is my favorite, and maybe the hard drive as a slave as well Then install win xp and it will conect to microsoft and activate itself. Note it will only work if you have the full xp cd not a compaq recovery cd. if your copy of xp was purchased from a shop, and is a retail one, then remove it from the compaq computer by formating the hard drive and just install it on the new computer and again, it will activate itself for both types. You will need the cd key coad that comes with windows. It's a set of 25 letters and numbers in groops of 5. You need this key to install windows. As for a recovery cd, then it will only work with the compaq computer and you will have to buy a new copy of windows.

Once you uninstall XP from the old machine and install it on the new, it should activate on line. I you have activated less than 120 days ago you will have to call Microsoft and XP will give you the number. You tell them what you told us and they tell you the activation number which you have to type in. Easy
On the install you still need the product key of course, but since you bought XP recently it is either on the sticker that was around the OEM pacakge - you saved this right? or it is on the cardboard folder that the retail version came in - you saved that too right? Without a product key you have a disk that can not be installed. Registration where you give personal info is optional. |
