Question DirectX Quandry

Hi.

I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ Alienware PC. I'm having a problem updating my DirectX. It says I have DX 8.2 but when I try to update to 9.0 it will say "did not copy required file" then abort the update. Stranger still, when I pull up the DirectX setup folder and open it - it is empty? I would use their "Alien Autopsy" help but this PC is not connected to the internet. - Using my sisters PC now- .

Thanks in advance for any response -

Mike

Curious as to how your were able to try to update to Direct X 9 without a connection? What source is the file coming from? A game CD? A burned copy of a MS download site file?

If your sister has a broadband connection (cable or DSL), and connects with a firewall router, you should be able to fairly safely use an ethernet connectiion from her router, share her connection, and download directly from Windows Update. You'll need all the latest Security patches, anyway - since there are several fairly nasty viruses and worms roaming about.

In fact, do your sister a favor & scan for viruses before you hook to her router. You might run a "double-check" online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Even if she only has dial-up, you could temporarily install her ISP software just long enough to do your updates - then buy her lunch for saving your new computer
