Win2K Pro won't stay shutdown

This has been a weird intermittant problem.... When I try to shutdown Win2k, it goes through all the shutdown routines ("saving settings", etc.) as normal. Then I get a blue screen message saying something about a "memory dump" and some other things. I couldn't say if there's an error code or not, since it flashes by so fast that I can't read it! After this, Windows restarts. I then have to resort to the power switch.

The last time that this happened it mysteriously cured itself after a few days... Weird.

I've followed up on all the usual suspects: virus/HD check & scan, registry cleaning & all that. Nada.

Otherwise, the machine functions just fine & is stable running.... Any ideas?

The only thing that I can think of is a dowload of AOL 9.0... which I aborted. It left me with a nice little "Retry AOL 9.0" icon on the desktop that I can't get rid of ($@#*king AOL!)! I'm not sure if the 2 events are related though.

StartupCPL made no difference... although it was handy in disabling unwanted startup progs!

Norton uninstall managed to get rid of the stubborn AOL shortcut but my shutdown (or lack thereof) problem remains.

AAAACK!

Does it give you the same problem if you try to shutdown from safe mode?
I'm just trying to narrow it down some.

Curious... It shut down properly when I shut it down (in normal mode) to being testing in "safe" mode... I'll see if the problem repeats & then I'll repost.

The problem did reappear 2 restarts later. However it does shut down completely in safe mode.
