System Restore takes up disk space. It doesn't really affect processing power, because it only creates automatic restore points when the system is idle.

I think it is definitely worth it. It has saved me before.

It'll save your bacon if you mess something up, but it does take up a lot of disk space. I usually make it a habit to clean it out weekly using disk cleanup. It deletes all but the latest restore point.

It doesn't have to swallow your drive space, you can set the amount of space you allow it to use which will set the number of restore points.
It can save your life if something goes wrong.

System restore in the base form is not worth it. I would recommend changing away from the default settings. Basically you need system restore running on the system partition in full force. A lot of people have their hard drives partitioned, with a drive that is dedicated to documents / mp3s / pictures etc etc. If you have such a schema, and you do dedicate a separate partition for such files, then other than wasting disk space with system restore on that partition there is little purpose to it. I'd recommend moving away from the default % left for sys restore and move to something smaller for such drives (that is if you are keen on keeping it).

It has saved me a lot of time, more than once. I make a restore point before I install anything new. You can also keep it "leaned" through disk cleanup.

I say yes, it's worth it, but customize it to your needs. For example, I have reduced the size of it so I only have about 3 or 4 restore dates, not a months worth as I feel thats excessive. I have a drive letter dedicated to MP3's, I have totally turned it off on that drive. I have another drive letter dedicated to data, again, I have turned it off on that drive.

Cool

Is it worth it?

I had a problem with my scanner (HP4200) this week. It was first time I had tried to use it on my XP system in over a year. Usually it is hooked to the 98 PC. Anyway the HP scanning software didn't see it.

I uninstalled the software with intention of reinstalling.

Guess what? System would not boot.

Booted into safe mode and chose restore point and got back up.

This is not the only time it has saved my butt.

For me the little amount of disk space is well worth it.

Its all over the place. You can try right-clicking on my computer and going to properties and the rest of it should be in the properties of other things, such as the star menu.

How to you limit the number of restore points? Do you create a restore point, then shut off the feature until you need it?

Cool

right-click my computer>properties>system restore tab
click on settings, and slide tab to whatever percent that you wish to use. My default setting was 12% of my c drive.
cheers, pawprint

If you shut off system restore, you lose your restore points. Adjust your percentage in system restore properties to keep current restore points intact

I think it's well worth the space it takes up. I've used it a few times and save myself from re-installing XP when I mess things up like I do!

I may be lucky so far, I haven't had any probs with XP, I do see that instead of 3 Gbts of space like on my 98 HDD, I 'have had up to 8.7 gbts, even after dumping all but the last, I still have 5.7 gbts. I have added Office XP and the media packs, but they still don't total up to 2.7. I agree, if XP craps out as often as 98 did, the restore point will be worth it, if you don't have a ghosted drive with all the goodies on it waiting in a slot for a ribbon. I may get rid of the extras that came with the XP kit, if I don't find any good use for them.
