Install 2000pro, cannot be ran in DOS
I just refomatted my hard drve and reloaded my CDROM driver, but when I try to install my 2K pro OS, A message comes up stating that the program couldn't be ran in DOS. What am I doing wrong? I am new to all of this, so I am sorry if this sounds elementery, but I am learning.

Win2K Pro is a bootable CD. Set your BIOS to boot from CD first and boot from the CD which will launch into the installation.

Set your BIOS to boot from the CD as first boot device, pop the W2K CD in and boot from it, you should then be presented with the install screens.

If you really want to install from dos, you need to type "winnt" not setup. This method requires smartdrv.exe be loaded as it will take many hours to install without smartdrive.
Booting from the cd is much a easier and more "correct" way to do this. |

none of This has worked, and I see no smartdrv.exe in any directories. I went into BIOS and switched boot drives, but it booted, then strait to C:/> prompt.

Smartdrv.exe is a small dos program; you can download it from here or you can extract the file from a win9x cd.
http://www.broomeman.com/support/smartdrv.html You need to set the bios to boot from the cd as first boot device. The option may be under advanced chipset options or there may be a boot section of the bios. |

Not if its a legal copy.
You can try booting with a set of Win2K bootdisks (4 of them); while your CD is in the CD drive. Remember to make your floppy drive the first boot device - from bios. and boot with Disk 1 in it. Microsoft HOWTO create Win2k bootdisks: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;197063 Download bootdisks from bootdisk.com (scroll down to Win2k bootdisk section) http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm |
