Dial-up Access

I'm trying to help a friend set up his internet connection. He dials a local ISP and had no problem untill he re-installed WinXP Home.

If the Connection Wizard is run, when it gets to the page to choose a connection, the top 2 (including "connect using a modem") are grayed out and the only available is LAN.

I tried to Add a Connection using IE, but when I hit ADD, a box pops up showing Error 711 - "Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager Service"

When I try to start the Remote Access Connection Manager in "Services", I get a box saying "Access Denied"

I'm logged on as Administrator. WHAT TO DO??

do a manual connection

1. new connection wizard
2.internet connection
3. set up connection manually, next
4. choose dial up
5. name of connection
6. inter the number
7. inter the account info

that should get you going

Tried that bailey... but #4 is NOT available. That's where it's greyed out. In SERVICES, if I try to start "Remote Access Connection Manager, an error box pops up that says:
Quote:
Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is Denied.

xp should not need any modem software

as long as it is in the device manager and listed as working ok, there should be no problems

The modem itself shows up in device mgr and also the control panel applet. It can be queried also. It's the "dial up networking" that's missing, which in XP, I believe is the "Remote Access Connection Manager" service.

Having built only 2 systems with XP (don't laugh! at least too hard ), I'm no expert, but now that I think of it, I did have to install the software that came with my modem for it to work. (I had to find the XP drivers online...).

In hopes it helps, I've attached a partial screen shot of: Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections

Remote Access is not on this screen...

just a thought, but when i was talking to a tech support guy at sbc and had some of the options greyed out like that for dsl connection stuff, he had me log out, then log back in as the administrator, and this corrected the problem. but that was dsl so it may be totally different.

Not supposed to be there... I believe it should be "started" under "Services" however. As I said, when I try to start it, I get the "Access Denied" popup.

Go to "Services" and you'll see where "Remote Access Connection Manager" is "Started". I don't have an XP machine here, but it's shown started on my Win2K Pro.

Thanks Hobey... but I am logged in as administrator.

Cool

Try this solution found from a google search re:error 711

"When you try to detect a modem in the Remote Access Service (RAS) setup, Windows NT queries the modem but returns the following error message:

"Windows NT did not find any modems attached to your computer."

If you try to start the Remote Access Connection Manager service or Dial-up Networking, the following error message appears:

"Cannot load the Remote Access Connection Manager service.
Error 711: RasMan initialization failure. Check the event log."

In the event log you will see:

Event 7024 Service Control Manager
The Remote Access Connection Manager service terminated with server-specific error 620.

If you try to open the Modem Control Panel, the application fails to open.

The Plug and Play service is stopped or disabled.

To resolve this:

Go into Control Panel and click Services.
1)scroll down to plug and play service
2)Start the Plug and Play service by double-clicking to ooen, and change the Startup mode from Manual
or Disabled to Enabled."

cheers, pawprint

Cool 6135 » When you create a new network connection on Windows XP, you receive 'Error 711

try this link re:services first
this checks to make sure your dial-up services are set to manual

Thanks a bunch pawprint for all the work. Ok, here's where I'm at. Per your first post, P&P IS started. Following directions in the 3rd post, both "Remote Access Auto Conn Mgr" and "Remote Access Conn Mgr" will NOT start. I did change them to "manual". "Telephony" was started and set to Manual.

That brings us to your 2nd post and KB article. Many problems here. 1. I can get to MS Update site by connecting the PC to my router, but it will NOT get any updates. Instead an error pops up. 2. I can invoke "Registry Editor", but it stays on the screen less than a second and closes. The same thing happens if I open "Taxk Mgr"... it closes immediately.

So I'm left in a bind... I can't download the patch, and I can't edit the registry because the window closes itself. What could be doing that?

I was able to edit the registry in "safe mode", and it fixed the dialup connection probs. Thanks again pawprint. I still have no idea why those programs/windows close immediately after opening. Anyone with an idea, please respond.

3. yes, up to date Panda, Spybot, & Adaware
4. I'll check the add/remove - thanks

I also went through all services and reset them to default Windows XP Home.

If I remember correctly this same thing happened to me when I reinstalled windows. It is addressed by microsoft and I think pawprint has the right answer in his post. I know I got mine going but had to add something to my registry I think.

"Cannot Create a Network Connection After You Restore Windows XP" Go to Microsoft.com and copy and paste this in the search window....Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 329441. It will give you the instructions. I remember now that it happened when I installed SP1.
