Utility Windows Close Instantly

When I open Task Manager, Regedit, or Msconfig the window appears for no more than a second and then disappears. In order to work with these utilities, I have to boot in Safe Mode. All services are set to WindowsXP Home default and no "add-on" processes are running (which I can only see by going to "Services" and seeing which are started).

What could be causing this to happen?

I would highly suspect a virus, and if thats not it then missing or corrupt system files, but if they work in safe mode then that is probably not it. I'm thinking if not a virus I would probably do a repair installation of XP.

Well, I've done both of those. I did a complete Virus check with Panda yesterday and also a repair installation. In fact, I don't believe (but not sure) this was happening before I did the re-install.

Yes... the other reasons are in my post "Dial-up Access" in this same forum.

Ram is OK bailey, thanks.

I've found another problem when trying for updates. It goes to the Microsoft Update Site and gets to the screen showing "Scan for Updates". When I click to do that however, I get an error notice.
