Install XP Home over XP Pro
Let's say, hypothetically of course, that someone installed a version of XP Pro that they didn't own on their home computer. Now they want to purchase and install a "legal" copy of the software. Can a new version of XP Home be installed right over the old XP Pro without having to reformat the HDD?
What is the difference between an OEM version and full retail? Thanks in advance. |

Not sure what you mean. Is going from Pro to Home reverse? If so, then I have to reformat the HDD and reinstall everything?

The thing works this way.
You can upgrade from NT or 2000 to XP pro but not to XP Home. You can upgrade from XP Home to XP pro. The 9x operating systems can upgrade to either Home or Pro ( M$ says you can't use 95 but it's been reported that some people have done so successfully.). In all cases you are going from less complex to more so. What you cannot do is reverse the process. So if you want to put a legal copy of Home on a comp with pirated version of Pro you have to format and reinstall. The OEM version comes without manuals and you cannot call M$ for troubleshooting. You also have to buy a piece of hardware to go with it, a few case decals would do the trick or you can order it at the same time as some piece of hardware you need. The retail gives you manuals and the right to call M$ for troubleshooting at installation and you get 2 more free calls for later; after that you pay. You don't need to order anything else. It depends on what it's all worth to you. |

A piece of harware? Why is that; is that just to qualify as a rebuilt machine? Sorry to be dense, but what's a case decal?

The rule for the OEM software is that it must be sold with hardware, like the rest of a computer.
In practice it can be sold with any piece of hardware, even a $1.50 cable, which is alot cheaper. A case decal is one of those little paste on things, like the ones that read "Intel Inside" or just "AMD", that some people stick on computer cases. Should you want a decal showing the roadrunner from the cartoons that can also be found. They're cheap also and meet the hardware requirement. |
