Post XP and Printer

Before I wipe everything of my familys computer, not this one, and load XP Pro, I got one question. I was at Best Buy today and overhead the salesman say something to the lady that XP isnt compatible with parallel port printers? I usually dont listen to anything they have to say but figured I should check it out since my mom would be pissed if I mess it up. Is there any truth to this comment?

Pure BS.

I wouldn't listen to anything vaguely technical that a salesperson at Best Buy, or any other big box retailer for that matter, says about computers.

Not quite the truth. The best way to check it out is to go either see if your printer is on XP's compatible list or go to the mfger's website and check for drivers - most of them have released updated drivers for XP.

Also be aware that just because a company brings out a printer does not mean that it needs to release drivers for the newest operating systems forever. Sometimes the operating system itself will contain drivers for the older popular models, and sometimes it just isnt going to be supported. Check for yourself. (or at least giving the name and model of the printer you are checking about can get others to help the search).

One of my printers was hooked on the parallel port when I installed XP and it worked fine. I just recently downloaded new drivers and hooked it up to a USB port. Incidentally, I see no difference in speed.

I did recently have a HP printer (parallel) that would not work on XP Pro on a machine I upgraded. Even with the digitally signed drivers. Hoewever, it would work on my XP Pro machine on the Parallel port.

We solved the problem by using a parallel to USB adapter and it now works great.
