wont power off!!
Hi,
I was running ME and found that the system wouldnt shut off unless i held the power switch down untill it cut out. So i formatted as it needed doing anyway....and now have 98 on there and its started doing it again! Im wondering infact whether this is a hardware prob? Any ideas? Cheers, Dan. |

try clicking start run and type msconfig hit enter and go to the start up tab untick every thing except sys tray and explorer hit apply then reboot the computer if it dont shut down you will nead to hit the reset or power switch to make it reboot then when windows starts try and shut down aggen if it shuts down ok restart go back to msconfig and tick one item in the start up tab reboot twice to make shore its ok and repeat ticking another item till the computer wont shut down or you run out of programs to tick if it wont shut down the last program you ticked is the problam

If msconfig doesn't identify a software culprit (though it has a good chance of success), you can also check in your motherboard's Bios Setup screens under the Power Management menu, and look to see what the setting is for your power button. See if there is an option simply to shut down [some power buttons will actually use Suspend or Sleep modes, unless held down for 4 seconds.] Assuming you have an ATX mobo & power supply, if ACPI is disabled in the Bios, you can try enabling it.
If none of the suggestions so far seem to help, you can try a more thorough trouble-shooter like http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm Best of luck . . . Gary |
