XP situation...
Ok, so i just got my case and am ordering some more parts tonight. Man, i'm excited.
Anyways, her is my situation. My dad bought this computer about 2 weeks before XP came out and Dell told him they would send him XP after it comes out. Now my dad didn't feel like upgrading to XP and decided to stay with ME. So i figured, heck, i'm building my own comp, why not save a 100 bucks and use the XP dell sent. Now after digging through a bunch of crap and finally finding it i see what it came with. A booklet for upgrading from one OS to XP and disc that says 'upgrade' and just a regular disc that says 'Windows XP'. At first I figured the regular CD that says XP on it is for me. But the i wonder is the disc only for upgrading and not installing? I really was excited that i was gonna save that much money but am starting to feel quesy. My dad still has the installation disc for ME and i was thinking that if the XP cd was only for upgrading, then maybe i should install ME then use the discs to upgrade to XP. Does someone know if i could use the Cd to install it or will i have to go the other route to save some money? Thanks... |

It is possible that the upgrade is proprietory and will only work on a Dell. I tried once with an XP disk that was for a new Compaq computer and it wouldn't work. Not to metnion that you have to check the License agreement, because it may not be legal.
