media files

I don't know if this is the correct forum for this but, here goes. Whenever I play a sound file it will play normally for a while & then either jump ahead a little or repeat the last 1/4 second several times. I have been trying to record into a program called Audio Cleaning Lab & it shows up in that but it also shows in other recordings without using that program so I don't think that is the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for responding. I appologize, I thought I should've provided more info. 256k RAM, 34 gig free space, ESS SOLO-1 (9050) audio drive. I have Norton AV, Task Scheduler & Sound up by the clock. I did just go to MS & download IE6 & DirectX 9.0b last night. I just tried playing something I recently recorded & it still does it. When I play CDs on the burner they play fine. I try to stay away from downloading sound driver upgrades because it tries to get upgrades for 98se but the comp. was originally built for 98.
