unwanted dual XP install
I loaded up WinXP trying to clear out an old system and got something wrong that I need to fix. When I told XP to format and install, I had a choice of using the small FAT32 partition, or the much larger NTFS partition and I chose NTFS. Now when I boot the computer, it comes up asking if I want to boot with Windows XP or Windows XP! How can I get rid of this option, and where should I have the machine booting from? Can you have WinXP loaded on a HDD with no partition at all?

you probably end up clicking the top entry for windows xp right. so right click on my computer => properties => advanced. the third option in advanced is startup and recovery. click on that. you will then see to edit the startup options manually click here. click that button and delete the second xp line. your problem should be solved.

As much help as I've had from PC Mech forums, I still can't believe how helpful you folks are.
Thanks Craig, that worked perfectly. |

eheh I had purchased another HD and installed XP on it, so I understood why there was 2 boot options but I thought it wouldhave went away with a reformat of the old HD.

yeah when i had formatted my friend's i was very surprised to see that. i don't know what it is about the file that would allow it to hold over info from the previous life. oh well, just another quirky thing. easy fix tho so it is not a big deal.
