i am working on an old compaq pc that the hd drive was not working so i put in another hd that has win98 on it , the problem is the sound card (everything is original in the case) I can hear the sound coming out of the cd player but nothing out of the pc with the speakers plugged into the back in the sound card plug .......device manager shows everything working ok with no conflicts .....I have tried troubleshooter and all is ok there also ......i know i missed something but being a rookie i do not know what that is ........windows recognized the card (i took it out and put it back in ) currently using window drivers .....do i need to update drivers?? (tried that with a d/l from their website)...sound card is a ES1868
...new drivers did not seem to help...what`s next Dick

Did you try the "Enum trick" when you put the used hard drive in? (it's down in the Tips & Tricks section of the forums - handy when you're in a hurry)
If everything looks OK in Device Manager, and you hear sound & music just fine when playing audio cds, check again in the sound controls, just so that while overall sound isn't muted, .wav playback or .midi playback might be. The basic Windows Sound Mixer will let you view the levels: type sndvol32.exe in the Start/Run box, or go to the Entertainment menu in Accessories from the Start/Programs menus. Click on Advanced to see the levels for each type. You may also have older drivers from the previous system on that used Win98 install. You could try booting to Safe Mode and removing all the sound devices you see, then do a run of RegClean 4.1, then reinstall the ESS 1868's drivers on reboot. There's a fairly decent driver on the Win98se disk; I can't remember if it's on the Win98 original or not. [That's a pretty common sound chip, you shouldn't have to work very hard to get a driver that suits it] You can download RegClean 4.1 at http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list [this version of RegClean was updated to work well with Win98] See if that does it. . . . Gary , that did it , thank you very much , i now have sound but still show yellow flag in device manager for one of the sound drivers , according to GLC in the aformentioned thread i am supposed to remove the ones that are not flagged , but that made the sound not work again , so i did the enum trick(cool man) and have sound again and just left it flagged until further investigation .... thanks again to you and all the folks here ......what a nice way to share the knowledge you have with the rest of us Dick
it is much appreciated by me |

Glad things are working better. Which device is it that has the yellow flag? It could be from a modem sound driver - it might have either "Voice" or "PCI Wave device" in it's title. You can also try looking at the "Properties" of that device in Device Manager, go into the Resources tab, and see what Device Manager thinks the trouble or conflict is.
It could also be a device from the older installation, you could also try removing it & running RegClean again. Never a dull moment . . . Gary |

hi Gary
looked at the device manager and it says it has no resources available and to try troubleshooter , start troubleshooter and it says some resources are now available but does not do anything when i click to go to next screen , I have not tried uninstalling yet but i think i will try that next , enum trick is time consuming if i have to do that all the time to get it to work again , but alas working on pc is time consuming just trying to learn more about them , fun though , the more you learn the more you need to learn thanks again for the help Dick |

Hi again
Were you able to tell which sort of device it is that has the yellow flag? It might be one you're not using - in which case, it won't hurt to leave it as is [you can Disable it in Device Manager if you'd like]. If it's an onboard device that you're not using, you can go into your Bios Setup screens and see if you can disable it in the Bios. If it is a device that you want to use, and there seem to be resources now available for it, but it isn't working - you can try removing it from Device Mangager in Safe Mode, power down & switch the card to another PCI slot (if one is available), and reboot. Reinstall the drivers if Windows doesn't detect it at startup. My other guess as to which device is that it's a "combo" device - some older cards were both sound & modem on one card = sometimes Windows only detects one of the chips, and doesn't know what to do with the other. The solution for those cards is to find and exact driver from the Compaq site (it those situations, you have to uninstall the older drivers first, then install the Compaq drivers). Best of luck . . . Gary |
