master/slave drive swap

i had a 60 gig maxtor drive for over a year now. and it's been making some weird high pitch noises recently. so i decided to not risk losing my data and bought a 80 gig seagate. currently both drives have winxp installed, and i've moved all my stuff to my new harddrive. both drives have Cable Select jumper setting. but when i try to make the new seagate the master drive by simply swapping their location on the ide cable, it didn't work. the bios detected my seagate as the master and maxtor as the slave, but right before it shows my choice of OSes to start up with, it says PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT.

what did i do wrong here?

thx in advance
