Networking XP & Win98

Hello,
Can I network an older Win98 computer with a new WinXP computer, using the newer XP as the server? Since the new computer is coming with XP Pro, will there be an issue with NTFS and FAT32?
Thank you

Hi there,

Not sure about the NTFS and FAT32 issue but they certainly can be networked as I have XP/2k/98 on a network.

How do you intend to network - hub/crossover/etc? If you know you will be likely to connect more PCs in the future, it may be best to choose a hub or even a router if sharing a high-speed internet connection.

Cool

If WIN98SE you can use a crossover cable, a NIC in each PC and run ICS. If WIN98FE you can still use crossover cable and NIC in each PC but you will have to use a third party proxy server as FE doesn't support ICS. Do a search on these forums for proxy servers.

On your new computer, run the networking wizard, select the correct type of connection you have, make the diskette.
Take it to the Win98 computer and run it.
FAT32/NTFS has absolutely NO bearing on networking stuff.

Thank you all for the suggestions and help. I will be trying it out in the next week or so, when the new computer arrives.

I'm a network dummy, but when I upgraded my Host box to XP Pro from Win 98.2, it saw, recognized, and setup a connection for my Win 98.2 Client box. It impressed me very much that I didn't have to do anything!
