Appreciate some assistance.
Helping a friend who wants to ‘make a copy of Windows’ that is installed on his PII 333MHz 288MB RAM W98SE computer. The PC has a CD-ROM, Floppy Disk Drive, and a Zip 100MB Drive. He does have the W98SE Product Key, however, the W98SE CD was damaged and is not usable. W98SE was not installed from the hard disk drive. Not aware that one can just back up or in his words, ‘make a copy of Windows’, installed on his PC. Is his best option to copy the contents of the hard disk drive to another hard disk? Any ideas about other options? Thank you in advance for your help. |

To "copy" one drive to another, or spanned over some CDR's is easy. To actually get an installable copy of Windows out of a running system is impossible.

He is entitled to an archive copy. It isn't piracy if somebody puts his archive copy in his hand.

If he's got his own key than it is perfectly legal for someone else to lend him a 98 CD... the key's aren't CD specific (trust me)
as long as he's got his key, any other win98 cd will accept it and allow him to install. |

Thanks for the replies.
I have a W98SE CD also, so if it is legal, I could copy win98 to the hard drive. Sounds easy enough. Did not mention it to him because I thought it was not legal. Going beyond the W98SE CD issue, believe that what he also wants to do is to back up his entire hard drive. Not too long ago he had some big time problems with a virus, and he had to reinstall everything. Don't think grandpa wants to pay someone do that again for him. As far as backing up the hard drive, what would be a good way to do this? There are programs like Norton Ghost, Drive Image, etc., but, is there a way to get the job done without purchasing this type of software? Thanks in advance for the help. |

As far as back up. In explorer right click the C: drive\properties\tools\back up.
Use it all the time it`s free and it works...

Unless he is using all the bells and whistles copying the entire CD to the hard drive is overkill. I normally make an install directory and a win98 sub under that and copy the 4 files from the root and complete win98 sub to the comparable locations.
I also put it on d: if it is available so c: can be wiped clean if required for reinstall. Ghost is fine for backup but requires you to install and remove the hard drive unless you want it infected with the virus too. Better to do something like a CDRW or CDR with the files that need backup. Windows is 200mb of stuff that you really don't need to worry about if you are going to reinstall anyway. |

KHT, "As far as back up. In explorer right click the C: drive\properties\tools\back up"...would this back up the entire hard disk drive?? Was not under that impression... edfair, "...and copy the 4 files from the root and complete win98 sub to the comparable locations"...you lost me... |

There are 4 files on the root directory of the CD. One of which is setup.
The cab files are in a win98 subdirectory. There are other files in other subdirectories that load if they are found. I just duplicate the critical stuff so it looks like the Cd would, setup and the other 3 files in a folder, and the cab files in a subdirectory under that. Overkill , but I've standardized on doing it that way. And I put the install stuff on an extended drive so I can blow the OS away by reformatting and still have the install stuff available. |

Its all good so long as the person only uses the Product Key for that one maschine; Installing Win98 on differernt maschine with the same product key is not legal.

Thanks for the reply.
Not interested in doing anything illegal. The individual only has one computer, so if he decides to go the route, he has a legal, authorized Product Key. |

He has a legal product key, right? You have a WIN98 CD, right? Do you have Nero? Afterwards he can do what he wants.
