fqpissed My defrag is wigging out too

Messing about with the registry probably contributed, even though I'm usually very careful. What might cause the defrag to try so hard and not get past 2%? Also with Scan disk, it starts up alright then after 2 minutes the cycles begins from the start. I turned off the virus protection, screensaver, any other active program, undid the registry changes I made today and still this happens. Any ideas what may cause this situation. Missing dll? Deleted files?
New question, totally different.
Any suggestions on a simple freeware email program? I thought pegasus would do but it is rather complicated.
Thanks in advance for any help with these questions

first download spyboot and check you computer for spyware next try runing scandisk at boot or in safe moad press the f8 key till you get the windows boot options try safe moad first if that dont work boot to the c prompt as for defrag run that in safe moad affter scandisk all so to check your files click start run and type sfc and hit enter.

Try running spyware and virus proggies, and if they don't do the trick, I reccomend this free ware Defragger : http://www.webattack.com/get/dkeeperlite.html

The only email proggy i'm somewhat familiar with it Outlook Express, works for my Dad....

After doing the other suggestions, before you run defrag again, shut down your screen saver and do a ctrl-alt-delete and shut down everything but explorer. Make sure the scheduler is off or paused in your task bar too. Run Disk Cleanup to free up some space. Then run the defrag. Another possibility is a hard drive without enough free space to run the defrag. If the above ideas don't solve your problem, you may need to delete some old programs and/or files to free up some disc space.

try doing these operations in safe mode.

any programs that might be running in the background will cause that to happed.

or you could take steps to make sure that nothing is running.

Sorry I didnt have much detail in the last post.

For adaware After you run the update (it seems to update 3 times a week or so) run the scan and right click on the files it has alot of options. I normally choose to select all files this will move them to quarenteen by defult, this however is not nessary as some may be items you are firmillar with and wish not to delete (when you revisit the site it will give them to you again anyhow). Choose continue then it will sort the files per the information you privided. I have 98 items in quarenteen, I like to see totals, I can delete them from there when I choose.
