Which procedure brought you out of the blackout situation?
Did your dad change the "color depth" and "screen resolution"? In Start/Settings/Control Panel/Display, Settings, "screen area", "colors". If he made changes, but all of your screens (not just the desktop) are displaying with less colors than usual, you probably need to reinstall your video card's driver. You can check this by going into Device Manager and seeing if Standard VGA is listed under "Display Adapter", instead of your usual video card's driver [such as ATI Radeon...] You can get to Device Manager --> Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager. If you need to find a driver, let us know. If your computer is a major brand, they often have "driver disks" that have all the drivers for the system on one CD. Modem activity is fairly variable, depending on many things (like Instant Messaging, Automatic Updates, etc) . . . if you are concerned about trojans or spyware, Spybot's Search and Destroy and LavaSoft's AdAware both work well - http://www.safer-networking.org/inde...&page=download http://www.lavasoft.de If you have broadband, and by modem you're referring to a "cable modem - or DSL modem", you will want to use either a hardware firewall router and a software firewall to ensure safer Internet access. A good free-for-private-use firewall is ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...ap_za_grid.jsp See how it goes . . . Gary |

Does your graphics driver look OK in Device Manager now? And the screens appear normal again? --> If not, let us know. You may still need a driver.
Many "tracking cookies" will indeed reappear when you revisit the Internet sites that they came from. The threat is often fairly minor - it's more a threat to your privacy rather than to the operation of your computer. Usually such tracking cookies are used for ads - the marketers try to find out what ad will interest you. And there's nothing wrong with a good old modem. I always have one in my computers at home and in the systems I build. Even with cable or DSL on the same system, those services can be unavailable at times (when the ISP is doing system work, for example). Then a dial-up connection comes in very handy. They can be speedy enough nowadays, too = the v.90 and newer modems usually average between 44k and 52k, which is fine for browsing. Let us know if you need to find a graphics driver. . . . Gary |
