Question cutting down boot time

Is there a prog that can trim the fat on the boot time of a 98SE system?

Visit Blackviper.com and try his XP tweaks for Services. Really speeds things up for me. Also, go to startup (I use msconfig yet), if you haven't and unselect all the nonessential startup programs.

First let me apologize for the XP tweak ideas when you clearly said 98se. 2.5 min seems quite long. I just rebooted to 98se on my system and from the time I selected the 98 hdd as boot device, it took 32 seconds for the entire screen to finalize with PopUpstopper, AVG, and Task scheduler running and my scanner confiqured. Are you running screen savers, by chance? I've read that they can severly slow down start up. I quit running them on all my systems.

My computer take an awfully long time to load up also. The only programs that are booted would be Pop-Up Stopper, and my IntelliPoint program in the task bar. What can I do? BIOS only takes a few seconds, but once I get to the Win XP screen it takes at least 1.5 minutes or more. I just have been walkin away from the computer and do something else while it loads.

I have been using a 98 SE system for years. Tweak UI is a great way to cut down on the waiting time, but there's other things as well. Try removing some fonts (namely TrueFonts) because those take up a good amount of loading time (if you have added fonts to your system).

I find it hard to believe that it takes that long though when you have such a bad ass system. What programs do you have in the Startup?

I have Win 2K and recently downloaded a free 30 day trial of TuneUp from CNET. I am amazed at what it does for not just bootup performance but overall performace also. It has SOOOOOOOOOOOO many tools it took awhile to get through them all but when the freebie expires I am definately going to purchase it..

Once I've booted up, it's fine. Everything runs smoothly. It's just that something takes a long time to load initially.

As soon as it passes the windows loading screen, all the background progs take less than 4 seconds to initialize.

Do you have the Windows "splash/logo" screen at boot up? There should be a way to get rid of it in the Tweak UI, if I remember correctly. That is just wasted time with the Windows logo sitting there looking you in the face while you get frustrated waiting to use your own computer!

:-)

Yeah, TweakUI will get rid of the splash screen, but all the splash screen does is hide the boot screens as the system is starting up...removing it doesn't reduce the boot time.

I thought there was a certain length of time that Windows automatically shows the splash screen (like 30 seconds), so the boot screens may be done, but you still have to wait for the splash screen to 'time-out', so to speak...

do you have any devices failing in control panel?

also stop non-essential programs from loading at startup.

creating differnt partitions for os & programs/swap/files alowing you to defrag the os on a regular basis can also keep it purring.

All the devices are running fine and all of the drivers are installed. I'm down to 2 progs loading at startup: the Asus Probe Utility and Sygate. Most of the programs are on a seperate partition than the O/S. I have run defrag several times as well.

I have used shopvac http://www.pcmech.com/show/os/156/ with great sucess and have seen it used for great failures.

please read the direction 3 times and back up data before using any reg scrubber. I also don't know if it will work with your current config.

is it possible that your MBR is running out of space with the "quad-boot"? (I wouldnt know a workaround for this)

MBR?

I already ran something like that for the user.dat and system.dat files. The file sizes shrunk, but not a huge difference in boot time.

MBR Master Boot Record (when you have multi OS's they are addressed here I'm learning)

the size of the files is not a huge issue on itself. The data in those files with dead links can slow you greatly.

It does when it works. note this can be a dangerous tool. use with caution. I would look for evidence of it working on a system configured as yours (multi boot, multi drive, modern ect) it is a older program and I don't understand the funamentals of it.

So if it does mess up, I can run the undo .bat to restore it to the state before I ran shopvac, right?
