Smile 'Over the top' Install

Appreciate some assistance.

Have W95C installed on an older ThinkPad laptop, and would like to install W98SE on it.

Have a legal copy of W95C (Full version), and of W98SE (full version).

BTW, do not care to do anything illegal, inmoral or fattening!

Is it possible to do an 'over the top instal' renaming the win.com folder and install W98SE on the laptop with W95C?

Should work. But you might have to visit the IBM website for some of the laptop's more specialized drivers (you could probably do this after you install). Remember to install to C:\Windows rather than to C:\Windows.000

Thanks for the reply, Gary.

Read some of the guidance on the Tips and Tricks section and was wondering if it would work.

Do not want to purchase a W98SE upgrade CD, when already owning W98SE full version.

Might give it a whirl and see what happens.

Hal upgraded his machine that same method, from Win95-to-Win98-to-WinMe using over-the-top each time, but I don't think his was a laptop.

It doesn't make any difference as far as the installation procedure, it's just that less of the drivers would be available on the installation disk. (so you'll default back to Win95 drivers for those). Then you could just grab some more recent drivers from the IBM website.

Would advise to download the potential 98 drivers onto the hard drive into a separate directory before you start the upgrade.
If the installation glitches you are without the machine to do the downloading. Or you have to do it with floppies.
