System Standby
I have two virtually identical computers running XP.
On one of them "standby" is greyed out on the shutdown menu. I cannot enable it in "power options" and ACPI is enabled on both motherboards. (Asus A7N8X Deluxe) Jack |

I have a screensaver installed, the same one in both of them.
There is no "hibernate" available on the one without standby. Thanks for the reply. Jack |

Do both systems have SP1 installed? In the power options, do you have an option for Max Battery? That has a setting for standby. Also, check the Advanced tab. Do you have a setting for Standby when you push the Sleep button? HTH

Both have service pack one installed. If I apply "max battery", there is still no standby or sleep available.
Both computers have the same settiongs other than lack of standby ability on one. Jack |

The video cards are the same, Nvidia FX in both, using the same drivers.
Stand by was unavailable right from when XP was loaded on to the brand new serial ata drive --- before anything else was installed. I loaded the two computers on the same day, but one has standby. I am beginning to think it was missed somehow during the installation of XP. Jack |

Hello again,
In control panel power options first screen it says -- Turn off monitoer and turn off hard disc. The other one has the standby option. I will create another user account when I get home this evening. I must go to work now. Many thanks for the suggestions. Jack |

Another user account made no difference. This evening I have flashed the bios to the latest version on both computers. The one still did not have standby available.
I have been to the Microsoft database. I could not find a reference to my problem. I think that it is an installation problem, but as the computer runs perfectly otherwise, I do not want to format it and start again. I also tried the XP system file checker, but it did not fix the item. I went into the add hardware to look for anything and everything. I got a message to re-start which I did. Afterwards the standby was there, and in power options. I enabled it to a 15 minute delay and was pleased. After another re-start it had all gone again. I suppose I must live with it. I am grateful for the suggestions, many thanks Jack |

System restore finds nothing.
I had this lack of standby right from when I first installed XP on the new serial hard drive. I did both computers on the same evening, yet one had standby, the other did not. I loaded the motherboard drivers before the graphics card drivers or anything else. Same drivers in each case. It has to be a corrupt installation. As I said I will have to live with it, because I do not want to format again. Jack |

I have booted with the XP disc several times. When it gets to "Press R to use system recovery" all I get is a Dos prompt with the usual Black screen.
I have no idea how to proceed from there. Jack |

I knew about that, but when I try it, it goes to a Dos prompt again.
I can only assume that it is something to do with having a Serial ATA hard drive, and xp repair looks for IDE drives. I suppose I can live without standby. Thanks again Jack |

Pressing f6 will not work because XP asks for the drivers on floppy after the format, which is long after the repair option.
I willl try to load XP over itself within Windows, but it may be Friday evening before I have time. Thanks again Jack |

I tried to load XP over the top within Windows, and after an initial loading of files it gives itself a re-start. It then will not boot at all, unless I boot from the CD.
If I boot from the CD, it is like doing a fresh installation with the possibility of losing my files, so I stopped it. I can now get it to boot as normal, so fortunately all is well. During the week I re-formatted a friends computer and loaded XP for him. He did have standby but he does not have it now. I have asked around and it seems to happen to people occasionally. I am going to format mine and load XP as a fresh install next Friday. That is the only time I will be able to load XP, and everything else. I could have lived with it, but it is a challenge now. Onward through the fog. Jack |
