bootup problem

I have a dell desktop and had put another hard drive in there just to format it and had unhooked the ide cables and power to the master hard drive and then took the one I formatted back out and hooked the cable and power back up to the master drive. I am now getting an error message every time I turn it on to press the f1 key to reboot. I do that and all that happens is that I get a repeat of the same error message. I cannot figure out what could be wrong. This was the only thing I did to the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this without losing all my data on my hard drive?

thanks

Did you do the hard drive switching with the computer plugged into the wall outlet?

Did you go into BIOS to be sure the hard drive is recognized properly?

What is the exact wording of the error message?

At what point are you getting this error message? Is it right after you boot up or after the first boot screen switches to the next boot screen?

Did you go into BIOS to see if the right hard drive is listed?

What are the specs of that system?

When I boot up it goes straight to this error message "strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for set up utility". The specs are: 256 DDR SDRAM at 333MHZ, 64MB GeForce4 MX Graphics card, 60GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard drive 7200RPM,Windows XP,SoundBlaster Live, Norton anti-virus 2003,Pentium4,Samsung CD-R/RW

press f2 to enter the bios and look for the hard drive section and set it to auto then save and reboot

I would go into BIOS and do a AUTO DETECT for the IDE channels.

Or you could try clearing the CMOS.

I went into the bios and the hard drive is on auto. It had a place next to it for another hard drive so I looked at that one too. I don't have any other hard drives on this one right, but I guess I did a dumb thing because I put that one on auto and saved the changes and now my computer will not bootup pass the Dell logo screen. If I get back into there cricket how do I do an auto check for the IDE channels?

If the BIOS is set to AUTO, the drive should be detected automatically. I would double check to see that the IDE cable is installed properly. Red stripe should match up to pin 1 on the hard drive and motherboard connector.

I checked the IDE cables and everythings looks like it is hooked up right. I still am getting the same error message. I am also sometimes getting an error message when I boot up that my keyboard and mouse are not detected. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. It is hooked to a linksys switch which is hooked up to the computer that I built myself and dell is the secondary computer on the switch. Would that cause a problem with dell booting up?

I checked in the bios and there does not seem to be a load default setting and I checked all connections and everything is tight. I am still getting the same error message. Any other suggestions on how I could fix this and not lose what I have on my hard drive?
