unexpected printer operation

My HP printer started printing unexpectedly. It does it at start-up and sometimes after the PC has been on a while.
It began happening after I turned on the firewall on the other networked PC at our house. The firewall wouldn't allow printing to the shared printer so I turned it off and thats when it started. It prints fine but wastes a sheet every time I turn it on the computer.

I have windows XP on one machine and 98 on the networked computer.

I have Linksys router.

I have downloaded new drivers from HP website.

I've unplugged the parallel cable and cycled power, and it still does it.
thanks,
chuck
