Cool computer freezing

Hey whats up guys see if you can figure this one out!!

About three months ago i replaced a faulty power supply on my computer but being that i was too lazy i didnt put the cover back on so now three months later the computer keeps freezing on me, not even the reset button works. I was thinking maybe dust got somewhere where it shouldnt but i doubt thats the case.

The problem is that whenever i turn it on it begins the normal boot process but freezes at about the point where it's counting the ram or as soon as you get to the screen with all the accounts or sometimes it allows me to access my account but freezes five minutes later and each time having to turn it off and on again and i can only use my computer after about the 2nd or 3rd try.

I havent tried much but to tell u the truth i dont know where to start.

What you describe sounds like a heat issue. Since it seems to stop at different points in the boot-up process it shouldn't be software (at least, it wasn't...failed boots might have changed that), and since you can't do it after the 2nd or 3rd time, it sounds like something is overheating and failing.

I am inexperienced in this regard, anyone else have some suggestions?

What power supply did you replace it with? What you describe could also be as a result of a bad power supply - assuming you had NO issues with the computer to begin with.

Also doesnt hurt to do the obvious - turn off the computer, check all connections (cable), check to see your peripheral devices (PCI, AGP etc) havent come loose, check to see the RAM is seated properly.

Go into the BIOS; most BIOS have a hardware monitor - leave it on and check voltages and temperatures from the BIOS.

The type of power supply (model etc) would be helpful. Athlon's are power hungry, and the VIA chipset isnt much better in terms of tolerance to voltage & power.

I do have a question... Why did you replace the psu to begin with?... If for no particular reason, then my question is moot, eh?...
