Eliminating asking for password
I have just installed an ethernet card in my sisters computer and now everytime it boots up it asks for a network password. How do I eliminate it asking for a password? She is running Windows ME. When it asks for a password I don't put one in and just click okay. I have also tried clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner. Neither works. Thanks.

Hello,
Are you using Client for Microsoft Networks or Novell? This usually occurs if you are using Novell. Atleast that is what I know, because I use Novell at school. |

I'm not sure about MS Networks or Novell. She currently has a dialup ISP and I installed the card for DSL. It is a stand alone computer.

Go into Start --> Control Panel --> Users and Passwords(Could be Users under 9.x) . I havent used 9.X in a long time, but check in there for some type of option where it requires you to login at startup. If you can find that, disable it.
That is all I can think of at the moment. Hopefully somebody else will come up with some more ideas for you to try. Good luck! |

Heres a good hint that will rid you of many problems: upgrade to XP. ME is the SLOWEST and has the most errors of any os. Its been said on these forums that people will recommend Windows 95 before Windows ME. Thats pretty sad. That should take care of your problem, because XP is totally configurable to your specifcations. HTH

Will this machine run XP? It is an HP Pavillion 4535 with a 400MHz Celeron. I have upgraded the RAM to 256 MB.

Whilst XP would go on the machine I personally wouldn't recommend it as it would run slowly.
As for the login box if you have never typed a password then simply click ok instead of cancel. If you have typed a password then search for files called *.pwl and delete the one with your sisters login name as its title. Make sure that the primary network login is Microsoft Family login and that in the passwords section of Control Panel the option that reads something like "All users use the same desktop settings and preference" is selected. Reboot and when the password dialog box comes up then click OK. |

If all else fails, please try this:
Install Tweakui and run it. Goto Network\Log on Automatically at System Startup. Enter your sister's name but since she is not on a network, leave password blank. Apply. Next time you boot up Tweakui will log you on automatically. ( In Win98 you can install Tweakui by going to your Win98 CD, \tools\reskit\powertoy\tweakui.inf. Right click tweakui.inf\install. ) Last edited by Julie; 09-24-2003 at 08:58 PM. |

This will fix your problem. Open control panel, click on network. Change primary logon back to windows from client for microsoft networks. This will then stop the computer from asking for the network password which you don't need. Since you have bypassed the windows me password, none will be required.
