Posessed Computer wont boot!!

When I try and boot up I get an error saying windows cannot load because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windiws/system32/config/system
I am trying to use recovery on the win xp cd but dont know what commands to type in the prompt. Just before this happened my computer started locking up all the time, and if I shut it all the way down, about 10 sec later it would turn back on all by it self. I have allready run a trojan scan and a virus scan and both come up clean. I am pretty decent with computers, but this one has got me stummped! Any help would be great!
Thanks, Ricky

Here is what I have in the computer
Motherboard-Gigabyte GA-7VA-C
CPU-AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 2.0ghz
Memory-2 512mb chips 1 is Kingston, cant remember the other one.
Video Card-ATI Radeon 7000 AGP 4X 64mb DDR
OS-Windows XP Pro Service pack 1 Build 2600 Current with all updates

What U want is not the recovery console but go ahead and boot with the XP CD and go like your going to do a new install, and it will then prompt U for a repair installation, say yes to that and that should fix U up...

Just did all of that. Worked good for bout 30 min. Now getting different errors, some resulting in the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH, but all have something to do with windows sysstem files

It actually could be hardware then, and especially sounds like it could be your system memory (RAM). When RAM begins to go that is exactly how it begins to act, the errors will be all kind of things leading U down all kind of rabbit trails but it could be the systemm memory itself causing all the errors...

Could also be the PSU.

I have seen these type of probs when the PSU is going south. If you have a spare or can borrow one, try another PSU and see if the issue gets resolved.

Since you have already done a repair install, I would now check the memory. Here is a link for a memory tester.
http://simmtester.com./
Save the file and double click on it; the program will create a bootable floppy for you. It runs independent of the os. As the above post mentioned; if the memory checks out ok, I would look at the ps. Post back with the results of the memory test.

While we are testing, also download and run the hd mgf's utility for checking the disk.

Well, everything checked out OK. After a lot of web searching, reformating and reinstalling, I found out that it was a WORM that was doing all of this. One of the Blaster Worms. Man I hate those things!! Thanks to everyone for there ideas and help!!
