Question about installing/reinstalling Windows XP

I've got a question about the use of windows xp home edition...

I bought windows xp a little more than a year ago for my custom pc build. My computer has been growing old after a year and I am thinking about upgrading it.

My question is: If I get a new and bigger hard drive and install windows xp again, what do I have to do to be able to use it? I've heard from my friend that I have to call them and get a new activation code or something. Can someone please explain? Thanks!!

If its just a hard drive, chances are that you wont need to call them up. And even if you have to, its a cinch, takes about 3 minutes of your time, and its no hassle. (do a search of activation within this forum and you should get a few 100 such opinions).

you should be able to just copy the old drive to the new drive with the software that comes with the new drive, once that is done just switch the new drive to the master drive and the old drive to slave.
then delete the partition from the old drive and then you will have a good second drive to store files on

I recently installed a new hard drive and was not required to "call home".

If it will be a "fresh" install, not a disk image copy, my understanding is that you will have to re-activate because the fresh install doesn't recognize the fact it's already been installed...

Cool

I did a clean install after a little over a year and only thing I had to do was the online activation again.
