Exclamation Urgent: lsass.exe

[ Windows XP - 512MB Ram - 80GB Hardrive ]

Hello,

I was just uninstalling some applications - and drivers for old hardware i had installed - today when, out of the blue, i received the following error after re-booting my system :

Code:
lsass.exe - System error
Object name not found
This happens just before you get the usual WindowsXP logon screen. I now can't boot into my system normally, using safemod, using debugging mode, or using the "Last good configuration" option.

Any ideas what i can do? I'm not really wanting to go through the whole format/re-install route and as i don't currently have another PC it would mean i would lose all my important documents as well (the one time you wish you had a recent backup ... ).

ASAP would be great because of all the days it has to break, i was expecting some pretty important stuff via email

Thanks in advance for any help

The exact same thing happened to me (also out of the blue), and the only solution was a reinstall.

Is there any good way to do that on WindowsXP? And does it mean i'll have to format everything? What about retaining my user settings?

Is there anything a could do using the recover console?

I couldn't use the recovery console to do anything. When you install again, you should be able to put the Windows CD in the drive and reboot, select "Install," and then select "Repair" after it finds that Windows is already installed.

Thanks, i'll try that just now

I've got the same problem with the recovery console running it from the CD-ROM. It's absolutely useless - just gives me access denied errors to the folders i really need access to, and the commands aren't powerful enough ~ can't even copy folders. Needless to say their system restore points are useless if you can't access them

I'm thinking of moving to linux.
