Windows opening slowly

I have a computer with a Soltek SL-MRN Mobo, Barton +2500 CPU, 512 Mb ram, and a W/D 60 gig hard drive with about 50 gigs free space, set for indexing, running Windows 2000 Pro. When ever you click on an icon to open a program it takes a very long time for the computer to respond. Even when I try right clicking to get the drop down menu, the menu takes a long time to appear. I have to click the mouse button several times to get a response. I thought it may be the mouse going bad, but my kids use it to play games and it seems to responds OK. They are also to able to play games in the DVD player while listening to music in the CD at the same time, so I don't think there is a problem with the mobo, CPU speed or memory.

I am thinking it must be something in the settings or the mouse since I don't get the little hour glass icon right away. Anyone experience this before or have any ideas.

I have an AMD 1200 with 512 Mb ram etc and XP Home with the same problem at startup. It is running FAT32.

Once it reaches the desktop which takes almost a full minute, the drive continues to run for at least another 60 seconds. The drive has been cleaned and degfragmented.

Any ideas?

I have spybot and adaware already installed plus AVG anti virus programs. I didn't see anything on them.
