I have the opportunity to buy a copy of windows xp pro at a very reduced rate(au$158) But it is a Dell oem version. My question is can this be used on any PC? It is brand new and still sealed.
I have been told conflicting information that it can only be used on a Dell system!

It should be able to work on PCs other than dell. I never heard that MS makes custom OS discs just for dell. However, you can only install one copy of XP on any PC (ie: you can't give the disc to your friend so he can install it in his PC too).

Dell used to give a full OEM version of the OS with thier PCs, haven't looked at the OS that came with my new Dell, but it looks like a reovery cd.
Newegg has good prices on OEM Os's. |

The Dell CD's are full versions, but Dell sticks the Microsoft Windows license on each machine they send out. Even though the disk isn't opened, that copy is already licensed to a particular Dell machine. These copies do check for the proper Dell Bios before disabling the registration requirement.
If you load it on a non-dell machine, it will give you 30 days to register before it stops working, just like a regular purchased copy. I haven't tried to register one before but have a feeling the version is specific to Dell and probably wouldn't work. |

I purchased a DEll 4300 two years ago that had ME installed on it at the time of purchase. I received an Upgrade XP CD from them with the unit. It is the halographic CD.
I just built a new computer and used that copy of XP on the new build. I was required to call Microsoft to activate the copy on the new build. |
