W2000 internet connection
Hi.
My friends PC Compaq Deskpro P400mhz 256ram keeps getting the message that the web page is "currently unavailable" after about 5min of connecting to the internet. The modem is still trying to send data. If he reboots the PC he is o.k for another 5min. Ping does not connect when the error occurs. Could this be a modem problem? Any help would be welcome. Mike. |

As I cannot get a responce from trying to Ping various sites and outlook cannot connect either i suppose the modem must be suspect. The modem seems to be still trying to send data but not receiving.
I will try an external modem. Cheers. Mike. |

im guessing another program trying to connect for a update or somthing of that nature...
shut down all unnessary programs, get all updates needed (windows, drivers, ect)reconfigure his browser connection settings, check his dialer settings. Also some isp's will have a Idle Timer that can give you this sort of issue if you are not using there browser (AOL used to do this) if this may be the issue try using there browser, you can figure out a way around this after you know the cause. don't drop kick it yet, try a few things fist.

Possibly, and this is usually the case with DSL...
If you can't ping by name, ex. www.yahoo.com, try pinging by number. ex. 207.68.167.253. If that works, then you need to contact your provider, and get some DNS Servers to use.. It's an issue of your computer not being able to find them. Patrick |

Tried an external modem and that seems to have cured the problem. I will try the suspect modem on another PC and see if it was the device or a drivers issue.

O.k so i have installed a new modem and his settings look o.k but now after about 10 min of connection time the modem still seems to be sending and receiving data but I.E slows right down and the message "currently unavailable" comes up and i cannot ping or tracert by number or name.
What could be causing this problem? What issues are involved here? shall i re-install windows? I shall try and remove any temp files and check for errors. W2000 hes recently been installed with new drivers. He is running Service Pack2 There is no virus checker. Any help would be welcome. Mike |

I think Fudtone was correct "im guessing another program trying to connect for a update or somthing of that nature..."
Have updated to ServiceP4 and reset internet settings but still find that I.Explorer slows down after about 5min. Even withI.Explorer shut down the modem is still sending and receiving data as if something is hogging the connection. Will probably format the drive and reload for him. Mike. Have you tried any add removal programs?
Maybe is system is cloged with adds. Ad-aware is the one I find to be the best. It is very easy to use and finds tons of junk traped in regestry from old parasites. 8( format is the drop kick I was hoping to avoid. Also was there a web browser that the ISP supplied to be used? I would try that browser long before doing a format. Even if this is not the brower he wants to be using it would trouble shoot the issue. |

See if Windows Update is checked. It could be trying to connect itself to the net as fudtone suggested.

Yes thanks for all the good advice. Ad-aware solved the problem and his connection is fine now. Also found some viruses too.
