Have you ever had W2K running on this system?

Whilst the hardware meets the "minimum" system requirements, it's not going run very quickly. Increasing the Ram from 64MB might help.

If you've just rebuilt the system out of old parts, then check the Hard Drive is jumpered properly to Master. You could also try a new IDE cable.

Do you know what brand of Hard Drive you have? Try downloading the software diagnostics from the manufacturer's website and running it on the Hard Drive, just in case the drive has problems.

Ouch, I groan to think about how bad W2K would run on that machine. Forget about installing Office and Norton on there. Windows 2000 needs 128M of RAM to run okay, 256M if you have Office.

The bad news is that you can maybe increase your RAM to 128M but you probably couldn't go any higher than that. Plus it would be quite expensive to do so since you probably have 2 32Mb chips, which you would have to pull out and install 2 64Mb. One 32Mb SIMM is about $50.

Check the registry key:
BootExecute
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

if you change the entry to autocheck autochk * it should stop checking the drive

Make sure that your view is set at Tree and Data and not just Tree, otherwise you won't see any values.

Windows 2000, you should use regedt32.exe not regedit.exe.

Talking Win 2000 very slow

Both Regedit and Regedt32 will give you access in Windows 2K, but i don't think that it's a good idea for you to go poking around in the registry just yet. If you are not careful, you may edit the wrong key and completely blow up your registry. Your best bet may be to add additional memory to your PC and hope that it resolves the problem.

I run W2k on my older PC at 233, but 64Mb is definitely too little for any serious use. Mine has 128Mb and shows about 56Mb free after booting, and rapidly drops after running any large apps (which includes Office 2000), but I mainly use the machine for CDR burning and other chores (it's networked).

win 2000 very slow.

Ok, I have the same/similar question.

A friend of mine installed Windows 2000 on a Sony Vaio computer.. It has a 1.3 Ghz Intel Processor, 128MB RD-RAM (PC-800) and a nvidia Ge-Force 2 Video card. The only thing she has installed otherwise, is compuserve, MSN Messenger, Nortons Antivirus, and Zone Alarm Pro.

She upgraded from Windows ME, and did a clean install. In the end, her computer seems slower than it did with ME on it. Mainly, when she's online, but to an extent, always. One thing I told her, is to upgrade to the 512MB RAM, that it will max out at. Her Paging file is set to 700MB and 1440MB for the sizes. That seemed to help a bit, for over all slowness, and for a paging file size error she was getting.

Any other suggestions? They will be greatly appreciated.
Patrick.

I'm in Muscatine actually.. I told her about the RAM, and she's going to try it..

On a side but slightly related note, would the memory have anything to do with her Compuserve only wanting to connect at 24,000 instead of her usual 40,000+.. This suddenly happened after about a month.

I have a laptop with the same specs (233, 64 ram) and Win2K does install and run. It runs VERY slow but it is stable. Installing Office2K and Norton will kill it, don't even try. The hard drive will never stop chattering because you will constantly be in the pagefile. Put 98SE on it or add another 64mb ram.
