screen freeze while pages loading

I've reverted to IE 5 due to suggestion that IE 6 would cause screen hangups and computer to freeze. Using Ctl/alt/delete will not change or start any further action. My logitec mouse/cursor is frozen also.

It, the system will only hang while surfing and pages/a page is loading and I move the mouse/cursor before the page finishes.

I use Zone Alarm Pro and Norton AV 03.

For the first few months all was fine and then this was revealed.

I've not loaded any other programs, nor do I have games loaded.

Running win 98.

thanks
hiway

What kind of computer is this...a home built one or a store bought name brand?

Have you checked for IRQ or resource conflicts in Device Manager?

Have you scanned for viruses, spyware and trojans yet?

Do you clean out the Windows Temp and Temporary Internet Files folders on a regular basis?

I do viral, spyware and such weekly using Adware and Norton etc.

Win temp and Internet files are cleaned as well.

IRQ conficts are a bit above my knowledge base at the moment, but I can learn and proceed.

I run the following. The computer was somewhat home built from a store of techies in Houston and has been running fine for a few years now.

Regular cleaning of the cooling fans and components has been done regularly.

The system is as follows:
Processor a Main Circuit Board
400 megahertz AMD K6-2 w/3DNow!
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

128 Megabytes Installed Memory
128 Megabyte Module Size - 1 Installed
One Memory Socket is Empty
8gig hard dr

Go to Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> and click on System Information. Click on Hardware Resources and look in either Conflicts/Sharing or IRQ's. Let us know what you find.

Are you using dialup or broadband to get on the internet?

I'm using broadband. But have made no changes, freezing situation manifested after 2 or so years of having this service.

I'll look at sys info and conflicts/sharing now and reply with what's found.

How long has that installation of Win98 been on the computer without a format and fresh install?

Repeating myself, but feel it is somewhat relevant, this freezing only occurs when I move the mouse while pages are loading.

Could it be that the mouseware is corrupted?

Try uninstalling the third-party mouseware, and letting the builtin Win98 mouse drivers have a go at things for a bit. See if it helps. (Mouseware is usually Logitech. The mouse should still have most of it's functionality with the generic drivers).

You could also try things with a different mouse.
