Memory Read Error

This sometimes happen when I run Mozilla, but noticed that it happens a lot with Kazaa Lite.

I get this error...

Application popup: Kazaa Lite K++ - [Traffic]: Kazaa.kpp - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Running Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 4, 512MB of DDR RAM PC2100, SB LIVE, NVIDIA GEFORCE 4 TI 4200 128MB, IBM 80GB HD, 48X CD-ROM.

I ran Spyware check, and removed all spyware and this error still sometimes comes up.

No viruses, no trojans.

Thanks for the help guys!

It is strange because I only get this error when I run Kazaa Lite and sometimes Mozilla(Even Outlook Express sometimes) but never with like Winamp or AIM or Trillian.

Hope the RAM is not going bad. Will have to run a test on it though.

This is perhaps the single most annoying error message

It can mean a number of things. Is it always the name of the program you are trying to run (mozilla.exe, kazaa.exe or whatever) which has the error or is it sometimes explorer.exe? There is a patch for the explorer crash on the microsoft site

The error really could mean anything and everything from overheating to bad drivers

Check there's nothing flagged in device manager, you can check your CPU temperature in the BIOS or with Motherboard Monitor. Check the RAM with DocMemory from www.simmtester.com

HTH, Thanks,

Thanks for the reply.

Nothing would mention about explorer.exe . Just the program name.

Nothing is flagged in device manager. Checked the CPU/System Temp a few days ago, so I am trying to remember the temps, but they were like 105*F for CPU and about 95*F for system, so I don't think it is an overheating issue.

Every driver that I have is up to date, except my sound card. As I havent had the time to check the model # of the sound card. Device manager says SBL, so I downloaded a SBL driver from creative.com and when I ran the driver update, it said I downloaded the wrong driver, so I have to write down the model # from the sound card and put it on the site.

This would also occur with playing Half Life: Counter- Strike. Hopefully it is not a RAM problem, although I have life tim warranty on the RAM.

I haven't checked the RAM yet, but I will when I have some time(I am at school right now) . My question is. Can a test like this really determine if the RAM is bad? Is it possible for the RAM to cause errors even if the diagnostic test shows that the RAM is ok?

But the way I see it; I have the latest service pack, I have scanned for viruses, trojans, and spyware, and removed any spyware that was found, had no trojans/spyware. This could be a RAM problem, because I doubt that explorer, outlook express, mozilla kazaa lite, and counter-strike all got currupted somehow to receive this error, but I just don't understand if the files were damaged, then why would I only receive this error once in a while, and not all the time? If the files were currupted, I would get program errors upon execution of the program.

Thank you for your help everybody, really appreciate it.

Hi,
Did you install all the crappy add-on stuff with the Creative drivers? If yes, get shot of like yesterday.

You are correct IMO, in that although the ram may pass testing, it could still give you hassle.

If poss, try and swap out the RAM, beg or borrow from a friend.

Also don't rule out the possibility that it could have something to do with the PSU.

I just ran Counter-Strike, and I did not receive the error. I ran Mozilla, I did not receive the error, aswell as Kazaa Lite. So the errors that I receive are at random times.

Yes, I installed the Sound Card drivers and Audio HQ, because with Audio HQ, I can enable my surround sound, without it, I can't. I am going to get rid of Creative Play center.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Gonna steal a floopy from the school tomorrow and load up the Simm Tester with full test mode while I am asleep :-p. Should post back results within a couple of days.

I'll see if my friend will let me borrow a stick of his DDR ram :-P.
