Deleted File Wont give HDD space back
Hello
Im having a problem with a little problem that i cant seem to figure out. I had an take an image of my main C:\ every now that then just in case windows decided to take a crap one day. Anyway, I deleted the image file i had on my 2nd HDD for a little while and it said it was too big to fit in the recycle bin and if i wanted to delete it permanatly (it was about 28gb) So i went ahead and clicked yes and the file disappeared. The problem is that windows never gave me back the space from that file back for use. I figured it was just a glitch and started to copy the new image. (at this point there was about 6gb left) It only got so far and said that the disk was full. Neither the new image file or the old one are there but the space that held them is gone. Has anyone head of this? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks BTW this is WINXP SP1 |

Try scanning for viruses and empty the temp folders.

Have you run a disk check? What filesystem are you using?

If that does not work go to the link below and get a copy of Eraser (Free) and install it. It will give you a right click option to erase free space on your hard disk when you right click on the Drive letter. This in turn should give you back your space. I have also found that this also seems to increase performance.

Its probably your system restore in XP using the space. When the last date including the image drops off the list, the space should be restored. You can disable the system restore and related image files.... or reduce the allocated space to regain some of your room.

I did have the system restore monitoring turned on so i turned it off on that drive. but it still did not give me back the space.
Used that eraser program to delete some more files which did give me back the space however i did not see a way to recover the space from the orignal file that i tried to delete. (The 28gb image) Because I have no way of selecting it. I cant erase everything on the drive just to get it back because i dont have another drive big enough to hold all my crap. Statica, I did run disk check but no dice and I am using NTFS. Thanks for all your sugestions so far... does anyone have any more??? |
