Networking w/ Win2k

Currently running 2 PCs (XP & ME) through the 2Wire HomePortal, DSL. XP PC is connected to the HomePortal via ethernet cable, ME PC is connected via USB.

Getting ready to format the ME PC & install 2k, just wondered if there would be any issues with networking 2k through the HomePortal with the XP PC. Any snafus with networking 2k? Anything I might need to know? Any prior preparations?

Thanks!

Although I am not too familiar with the features that your "HomePortal" provides; it shouldn't be a problem getting setup. Although, as you most likely know, Win2K Pro and XP Pro (you didn't specify which XP OS) are more sophisticated business oriented OS's that handle file sharing, security, and data recovery differently than does the 9x versions of M$ OS's. I take it you are familiar with Administrative Accounts and setting priviledges, User Accounts and such. BTW, what do you use your home network for, primarily? Surfing? Gaming? Learning, like I do? The reason I ask is that you seem to be interested in the differences in Operating Systems. I have Win2K Pro and presently XP Home edition on one PC as a dual boot system. This assures me that only one of these OS's is present on my network with the other two Win98 se machines. Actually I boot into Win2K once in a blue moon and expect to reformat the two 40Gb hdds and install Win XP Pro and make the second hdd just an extended partition. Am building a 4th PC as soon as my case comes in. All other components except DVD/CD-RW drive are already on my bench. Now, if only my wife doesn't find out! shhhh....

The HomePortal acts as gateway, router, modem, the whole 9 yards. In my post above, HomePortal is a clickable link which will give you a pretty good idea of its capabilities.

I'm running XP Home on mine. Just wondered if there was any differences between ME & 2k Pro as far as setting up the home network, which is primarily used for surfing and sharing files between the two PCs.

BTW, I promise not to breathe a word of this to your wife...

Just follow routine network setup and all should be well. I did just briefly click on your link before my last post, but somehow I misunderstood what you were attempting and didn't delve into the HomePortals specs too much. At any rate, as you know by having run XP, it likes you to run the network setup floppy on all PC's. Personally, I setup manually and don't run that little POS. I don't like the pre-configured folders that XP tosses around. Be that as it may, it IS easier to noobie's, not implying that you are mind you.
I do appreciate your willingness to keep a secret! Although if she ever ventured to a site like this one, she would surely react as I do when channel surfing and happen to light on an Oprah segment! Skeeeee...daddle!

Thanks AlwaysUp, we don't like to run that little network setup wizard either, but looking at Black Viper's 2k Pro installation guide it appears as though 2k will install all the necessary protocols, then it should just be manually setting up file sharing permissions and we should be good to go...?
