Registry error loop

Got a mates PIII 1ghz Emachine PC which started reporting a registry error and rebooting.
It's stuck in a loop now.

I decided to reboot a clean Win98SE install and ran FDISK to set up a fresh partition.

After installing Windows, I unstalled the graphics driver and a PCI modem and the registry error returns.

Rebooted again and it even seems to randonly return without the graphics driver or modem.

I've tried two different RAM modules with the same results.

Could this be caused by a dodgy motherboard?

TIA

Have you seen any invalid page errors? If so, you might want to test the RAM or try yet another stick. Some PIII boards are pretty particular [though I haven't seen many eMachine TriGems].

Did any extra hardware get added just before the problem? eMachines usually have fairly modest power supplies, which doesn't help things. Those symptoms don't really seem like a power problem, though . . .

Try again with a single-sided stick of PC100/PC133 & see what happens.
