How many programs starting up when you start Windows? type msconfig in the "Run" thing under the start menu and uncheck all the programs you don't need to start up, like AIM, MSN, Quicktime, and tons of others that are probably on there. If you don't know what it is, don't uncheck it until you find out what it does.

Cool

Wish I could offer some help but i cain't. I experienced the same problem after about a year. XP took about 4 minutes to boot up. I ran Spybot, Adaware, defraged, cleaned things out, removed things from startup, nothing helped.

Mine started after I installed a video capture card, updated the software, changed the video card I had and I'm thinking I messed the drivers up somehow.

I formatted and reloaded couple of months ago and the problem has gone away.

If you haven't already, shut down all of XP's unnecessary services. A couple of them are huge security holes and shutting down the unneeded services not only increases online security but also usually yields noticeably better system performance.

I use the guide on Black Viper's site, applying the settings in the "Safe" column.

I agree with the Black Viper suggestion. Here's a link from MS that may help.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

Here's another

http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp

It was mentioned earlier to remove AIM and MSN messenger from startup. However, I think they will come back unless you open them, go into options and uncheck the box for "start when windows starts". HTH

Cool

Red I searched the MS base but never found those links you posted. Wish I had as I had installed a HP Scanner that I had problems with. Had no idea that it could be causing my problem since it was a USB device.
