Win 98se over XP

A person that I work with is having alot of troubles with his XP (one machine won't boot up completely, now the other one is starting to do the same). They didn't like XP anyhow. Is it safe for them to install 98se over the XP. I not sure exactly what machines he's working on, but the one is an HP, the second is a compac(?). I don't have that much esp. with XP, I've advised possibly reloading XP over it, but they say that there is not an option to do so, just a reformat the drive and reload as new. Any advice on this?

Well here go's.

Installing 98, may or may not solve the problem. If the rigs are newish then I doubt that it's gonna help, as with 98 being a little long in tooth now (but still a fine OS), I doubt that it would serve as well as you might expect on the rigs.

Most unfortunatly those Rigs being made by who they are may not have a full driver set for 98.

Please try and find out exactly what the issues are. It will help us in putting things right for them.

We will need a full system spec and we need to know exactly how uptodate their XP install is.

Please help us to help you.............

You can't "downgrade" from XP to 98 without wiping the drive clean and starting over. (There's the dual boot option but it will be problematic trying to install an older version - 98 - after the newer version - XP)

However, an XP reinstall can usually be accomplished bypassing what is the, I assume, manufacturer's Restore/Recover CD the owner has by using the files in the C:\I386 folder...which are the XP setup files copied from the XP CD during install.

If that folder exists, find the winnt.exe file, click on it to open it and an XP reinstall should begin.
