Bought a HP with Win XP about a year ago and didn't like XP so formatted drive and installed Win 98 but had no sound or modem because i suppose win 98 is too old...

The sound card is according to specs " AC 97 integrated on mother board - Codec: Analog Devices 1886 Really don't like XP and will probably go back to Win 98 and buy modem and new sound card if can't solve this problem. The PC is an HP Pavillion 712a Desktop If anybody can help I will be grateful regards Mats |

You might try here first. It's the HP software and driver download page. This link should take you right to your system.

No luck
Went thru a long involved process going to Windows update etc etc and then told that this is a pirated version of XP...
All I want is to know what sound card is in this computer and where I can get a driver to make it work!!!! Does anyone know how to do this?? Mats |

If it was a pirated copy of XP, you need to obtain a legit one; Piracy is illegal, and discussing it is against forum rules...

Please try reading my posting more carefully please. This is not a discussion about piracy. I have paid $2000AUD for this computer with Win XP Home Edition loaded and it does not work now. The Department Store is unable to help as it is out of warranty. I am seeking an answer to my question "All I want is to know what sound card is in this computer and where I can get a driver to make it work!!!! Does anyone know how to do this??" Can anyone else help? Mats |

Do you think it could be something real simple...
When I go into Device Manager and right click on Multi media audio controller I get this message "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." Can't remember what Code 28 is? Does anyone know? Mats |

you must use the restore cd that came with it to set it up the way it was when you bought it, hp's come with xp preinstalled, that is why windows down load site thins it is not leagle, you also need to use that cd to be able to get all the drivers for all the hardware that came with it,
any other problems in doing this needs to be addressed with the dealer from whome you purched it from. just my opinion |

Firstly thanks to all you people bothering to reply. I am learning heaps!!
To Gneo: The HP site is not much help. The soundcard is incorporated in the motherboard and the maker of the sound card component is not listed and there is no driver listed there for a sound card. I tried loading bios and video drivers but not luck with these. To Bailey: As Win XP was already installed no CD was provided. Teh security code for the licence however is on a sticker on the side of the computer but is no use as there is no way of registering this at this late stage. As the supplier is a department store it is not possible to get any help from there. Teh next step is to open up the computer and rip out the sound bit and see who made it and then go to that site to get the driver. If this fails I will buy a new sound card that is compatible with the motherboard after I work out how to do this. In the meantime I'll just keep tryin'!!!! Have to say I loathe XP and would like to return to Win 98 but that is a whole 'nother story Mats |

An update.
Deafening silence! Am I on the right board?!?!? To answer some of the issues above... NO!!!!! HP website does not contain drivers for sound cards that are incorporated into motherboards. Nor does Conexant who make the sound component. These days stores do not supply "restore CD's" when they sell computers!!! You are supposed to rely on teh 'restore' stuff that HP have put into your computer.... Too bad if you want to reformat your hard drive.... You can just forget it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoever thought that a store would be interested in your problem when your computer is our of warranty. What planet are you living on????? So all advice received above not helpful I'm afraid. Instead purchased sound card for $AUD35 and fixed problem Mats |
