DirectX 9.0B Problems (I think)

A friend of mine (using windows 2000) not so recently installed DX 9 on a card which I am quite convinced cannot support it (SiS 450 or something, not sure). He has had problems running games ever since. He can install them fine, but when it comes to playing them, stuff happens (he's quite fague when on the phone) and he turns out not being able to run the game. I am therefore quite convinced that thanks to DX9 he cannont play a number of games. Is there something I can do, or any route that I can take to uninstall DX9 and put DX8 on his computer or something?
