about ghosting xp pro to xp home.
i have never used ghosting to copy a hard drive from one computer to another,i have os but thought i could save a lot of time on dial up by ghosting all the updates etc.to the new hard drive, can this be done?also i was wondering about the different methods, norton i hear about but power quest and true image sound much less complicated,do they work well?by the way the machine with the info on it has a WD hard drive and the new hd is a maxtor, will this complicate anything.GLC talked about the hd utility from the hd mfg.i assume it wouldn't work between different brand hard drives.one other thing, the computer with the info is using xp pro,the other will be xp home, will this make any difference.
didn't intend to write so much, just kept thinking of stuff, sorry.

if you ghost the hard drive then the xp home install will be replaced by the pro copy you will then have 2 computers with xp pro but only one license and that is against the license agreement

if you downlodaed the updates and saved them as a file, then just copy the files to the other hard drive.
if you did the download and install from the web site then no you can't because you won't have the files to copy. |

You can download most of the Windows Updates individually from the Microsoft support website, I can't exactly rememebr what they call it. Anyways, that's probably a much bigger pain in the arse to track down each individual update and then save it than it would be to just run Windows Update (WU) on the new machine. Plus some updates, when obtained from WU, have smaller download sizes than when obtained from the Microsoft website because WU knows what kind of computer you have and can tailor *some* updates to your specific machine.
