Dos Problem In Windows 98se
My PC OS is Windows 98SE.
On my desktop, I have an icon that allows me, with a click, to go into MS-DOS. Recently, there seems to be a problem with this icon. On clicking it, the system goes into the MS-DOS window and freezes. The system can re-boot into DOS but cannot get into DOS directly through Windows. How do I correct this problem? I have a DOS program on my system that used to work but this message now comes up whenever its icon on the desktop is clicked. "This program is set to run in DOS mode and cannot run while other programs are running. All other programs will close if you choose to continue." A "YES" choice will try to get into the program and report a failure and then restart Windows. My sense is that these two problems are related. These did not happen until recently. Please help. Thanks. |

Forget the message that I was getting. I have managed to figure that out.
However, my PC is still having probelms with DOS. Everytime, I try to do something with DOS from Windows, the system either freezes up or the follwoing type of messages appear. The one mentioned in my earlier e-mail does not appear anymore. These are what I get: "An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C000A950 in VxD VMM (01) + 00009980. This was called from 0028:C153EC08." Other numbers that appear are Exception 06 at 0028:00528000 in VxD" Or in V SERVER (01) + 1. Or in VxD VKD (01) +. Or in VxD ReBoot (01) + 00000143. I have re-installed the OS but the same problems occur. |

Look in c:\windows for a file called "dosstart.bat".
Edit it, and remove everything, then save it as a blank file. Point your shortcut to that file, see if it works. |

Thanks Reboot for taking the time to reply.
Look into C;\Windows and could not find the file dosstart.bat. For your information, I searched the entire system and could not find this file. |

Reboot:
Once again, thanks. I have my system set up to show all files. Still cannot find the dosstart.bat file However, I do not know what I did but the DOS part of my system, together with the DOS programs seems to work again. Cannot tell you what I did but 'fiddling' around appears to do the trick. Maybe someone out in cyberspace can explain it to me. |

VMM errors usually indicate a RAM problem - maybe it reseated itself when you hit the box with the big hammer?
