WinXP service pack.. which one had problems??

Ok.. My buddy gets blue screen on shut down and he said it started after he did a windows update. I've heard around that one of the service packs caused some problems. So my question is, which Service Pack was it and where can I find the fix.

The error he gets is a NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error so I have him running a memory diagnostic program on it to check his memory, but if it isn't his memory then maybe its the SP he downloaded. So.. any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think you must mean windows update. There's only one service pack released for Windows XP right now. As to which WU caused that problem, to be honest I've never even heard of it. I have heard of Service Pack 1 seriously slowing down XP systems and there was also an update that knocked everyone offline.

Was Service Pack 1 installed recently perhaps?

Yeah... it started after he ran windows update. But I think it may be his memory, I just figured I'd find out about this windows update I heard about. Just incase its no hardware related.

If he did a memory upgrade since he got the machine it could be an unmatching stick of memory. I had that problem before, except the machine was so unstable I couldn't even get it to the error point. Re-reading that error message I'd be willing to bet money he needs different memory. Try looking his machine up on Crucial.com if he has a brand name computer, or look up his MoBo if it's a home-built.

Cool

There was a update released with adverse effects that was later rectified with another update.

So if he is current on the updatges that would rule that out.

Look for an update with the numer 811 in the name. That one slowed both of my computers down to a near stand still. I have not hav ea problem with servic pack 1 though.

Whatever you do don't delete that update Q811493. It is a very important security update. But, Hi Ho is correct, it does slow you down if you have an early version of it. You can download a new version of the update from Microsoft's site.

If memory serves, Q811493 is one of the (many) patches that is required to prevent the "Blaster" worm.

The Microsoft web page about the bad Q811493 update is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;819634
and here:

Hope this helps!
