WinXP having onboard detection problems

I'm using WinXP Pro and an ECS motherboard using the K7VTA3 chipset. The lan port on the back is lit up when the network cable is plugged into it but windows cannot detect it, or the sound, or the canon scanner. I thought WinXP was supposed to detect all this stuff? I cannot connect to the internet for this reason.

yes, its full of .inf files and they are sorted by mobo chipset. It looks like everything is there but it says "file not found" when I try to run the auto setup and WinXP doesn't find any acceptable drivers when I have it search the cd for drivers. Maddening!

Have you enabled the on-board LAN in the BIOS?

Yes, there's an option for 3com LAN and Nvidia LAN both are enabled... however, the onboard network controller is supposed to be realtek according to ECS's website.

Do you have PnP set to "NO" in the BIOS Setup?

Does Windows detect any other hardware when you install hardware?

Do you see any Yellow "?'s or any Red "X's in Device Manager?

I was thrown off by a box that was laying here (this isn't my computer and I dind't build it) but the board is an Asus A7N8x-X and I got the onboard LAN goin. However, sometimes upon startup the mobo gives 1 long and 2 short beeps. I can hear the OS loading (hd clicking) but the monitor loses input. If I reset it enough times it'll come up. Any ideas?
