remove old program from registry?

I have removed an old trial version of a program , but it appears there are some ' crumbs ' in the registry that are making it not possible to install a new trial version. Where can locate all reference to the program?
I want to be sure before I buy
Thanks.

by reinstalling the trial version all over again, i believe that it is defeating the purpose of it being a trial. once you complete the trial, it retains that information to prevent you from reinstalling it.

Hobie - ' it ' .... and where it is ' retained ' is what I am seeking ... sometimes we need two trials to be sure .
Like an appeal in court.

Trial versions are like "People's Court," decision is final. Reformat!

That is why it is called a "trial" version.

Regedit. . . Find progname . . . & Find Next . . .
will clear your local Registry of references that use the progname as part of the key or value.

However some trials require a remote registering which records any prior "free samples" and stores it at their site. That's the gotcha. Others hide an entry under an unassuming key (all numeric, for example).

Not really worth the tribulation or karma damage

Thanks Gary-I just need to do a 5 minute, specialised, once in a blue moon job. Not worth the trip to the store , let alone the money.

Can be put in lots of places but normally in HKeyLocal machine, software, company name, package.
But they can also do some stuff in .ini files that will lead you down some primrose paths.

Parangles - for those 5-minute tasks, there might be a freeware or shareware title that would do. You could try one of the download specialty sites over at cnet, msn, or whatnot to see what's available. There's usually a section for freeware.

Well, I found some registry entries, deleted them, and it loaded fine... including automatically filling out its compulsory online registration form with the same bogus information that I gave it a year ago.
So.. as many of you have said, there is a bunch of stuff hidden away, who knows where. Anyway, job done. Thanks !
