XP Login Stuff-Up
Hi,
on a secondary computer of mine, ive installed XP, previously containing Win98, and after a month or two, it now jacks up when you logon. After clicking on any username option, it appears to logon, then instantaneously logs off again, showing the desktop for a split second. Ive heard that an upgrade installation of XP is not usually a good move, could this be associated? |

First I would try to boot in Safe Mode to see if I could get to Event Viewer for any clues as to what was going on.
If that didn't work I would do a repair install of XP. If the computer worked well for 2 months and just started doing this it sounds like something got corrupted. Could an upgrade over 98 have contributed ? Yes to the extent that it made XP less stable than it would be otherwise. In your place, and if I had the 98 cd, I would do a repair install and back up all my data files. The I would reformat and do a clean install of XP. In fact, since I'd be switching OSs, I'd wipe the drive with the disk maker's utility first to make sure nothing else would be on it when I did the clean install of XP. |
