Beginner XP License question
If I am using WinXP Home and I build a new computer, and scrap the old one, can I reinstall the OS on the newly built computer using the old disc?
I am sure this sort of thing is common knowledge, but as stated in the subject, I'm a beginner. Thank you for your time and help. |

Yes, you can but you will have to reactivate the copy on the new PC and may require a call to MS to do so.

Yes, you can but you need to use a component from the old PC to avoid any license issues. Using the old floppy drive would do nicely.
Jimmie beat me to it. |

XP allows you to switch out parts a total of 6 times before you have to reactivate.
That's probably why many people think that an old part or 2 means you don't have to reactivate. It's not true. If you build a new comp with new motherboard, cpu, ram, etc. you will need to reactivate. The good news is that if it's 120 days or more since you last activated XP you won't have to call M$ and can just do it on-line. |
