Unhappy Missing vmm32.vxd

That is the message I am getting trying to get other pc with win98se to boot. Has worked well until now. The complete message is: VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows. If this file is not in your PATH, you may need to reinstall Windows.

I am left with the C prompt.

Any ideas?

Well,,,, if I had looked more carefully I would have seen the earlier post. I will follow the advice there for now unless someone has some faster education for me. (My apologies to all who read this and wondered who the idiot was that didn't read further down the posts....)

Since the last time you successfully booted, what have you installed, uninstalled, tweaked, etc?

Which earlier post did you follow? [There've been a few about that file]. Sometimes the over-the-top reinstall can save time spent troubleshooting & solve it, in others that won't do. If you happen to have an older UMAX or Genius scanner attached to your Win98 box, there's a procedure for fixing that one, too. Sometimes just extracting new copies of a few system files is all you need.

Here are a few articles you can check to see if they apply to your situation:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;194679
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311188
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;191874

over-the-top reinstall: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846

Might want to run a full system antivirus scan, too, just to make sure you don't have a bug munching up your system files.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Galaxian, I have not done any installations, uninstalls, or tweaking. The pc had been on all day and used for some emails, etc.

Gary, the earlier post was evidently the most recent. It did have some of your comments in it that I have noted (including the over the top you mentioned.) Being novice at this, it is new territory. I will try all you have suggested. And the great thing is I will learn something along the way.

checked out the articles above. The first one nailed it exactly and step 2 (which I got to) evidently instructs to re-install Windows. I will try the over-the-top reinstall next chance I get (tonight). Thanks! I do want to save all the files, etc. on the drive.

(And I believe my McAfee AV is current and has been run almost daily.
